TORSIONAL STRESS CONCENTRATIONS IN SHAFTS: FROM ELECTRICAL ANALOGIES TO NUMERICAL METHODS
2013
This paper presents the historical development of methods used for the study of torsional stresses in shafts. In particular the paper covers both analog methods, in particular those based on electrical analogies proposed since about 1925, and numerical methods, in particular finite difference methods (FDM), finite element methods (FEM) and boundary elements (BEM).
Analogical reasoning and its development : role of executive functions and the goal of the task
2013
This manuscript develops an issue related to the involvement of goal management capabilities and executive functions in this type of reasoning and its development. The first three experiments examine this issue in two tasks of analogical reasoning, the scene analogy task and the A:B::C:? task, through the study of visual strategies used by adults, and children aged 6-to-7. The results show differences in visual patterns related to goals, and to the inhibition of irrelevant information for the solution of the problems, between the different tasks, and between children and adults. The following two experiments study the visual strategies, always in relation to executive functioning and goal m…
The Uses of Analogies in 17th and 18th Century Science
2011
International audience; The object of this research is to look at the extent and nature of the uses of analogy during the first century following the so-called scientific revolution. Using the research tool provided by JSTOR we systematically analyze the uses of “analog” and its cognates (analogies, analogous, etc) in the hilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London(PT) for the period 1665-1780. In addition to giving the possibility of evaluating quantitatively the proportion of papers explicitly using analogies, this approach makes it possible to go beyond the maybe idiosyncratic cases of Descartes, Kepler or Galileo and other much studied giants of the so-called Scientific Rev…
Analogismi, relazioni e nessi concettuali
2018
On the history of torsional stress concentrations in shafts: From electrical analogies to numerical methods
2014
This article proposes a retrospective on experimental and numerical methods developed throughout the past century to solve the torsion problem in shafts, with particular emphasis on the determination of shear stress concentration factors in discontinuities of typical use in shaft design. This article, in particular, presents the theory and related solutions distinguishing between two classes of geometries: shafts with constant cross section and axisymmetric shafts with variable diameter. Emphasis is given to approaches based on physical analog methods and, in particular, those based on electrical analogies proposed since about 1925. Experimental methods based on structural physical models …
Automatic Generation of Figural Analogies With the IMak Package
2018
Automatic Item Generation (AIG) techniques are offering innovative ways to produce test items as they overcome many disadvantages involving standard item writing, such as time-consuming work and resource-intensive demands. Although this field is relatively new, it is progressing at a high speed, and several contributions have been accomplished. Nevertheless, a scarce amount of AIG software evidencing favorable psychometric properties of the generated items has been made accessible to the broad scientific community. This research had two goals: first, to present an empirical study of items produced with the aid of the Item Maker (IMak) package available online and, second, to present IMak it…
